September Powder | Snowboarding on Kitzsteinhorn
As the second day was pretty hot thanks to the sun and that did have an effect on the snow structure. Having settled a bit during the night it was not so pow-powy the next day – as you can see on the photos below. In any case the feel with the board on the snow was still fabulous and the weather stayed beautiful! Thanks to the settled snow layer less steep offpiste became ride-able. I must note that Kaprun-Kitzteinhorn doesn not offer really steep terrain that is easily accessible. There are some really steep routes ending in the other valleys. If you are in search of a place that has a lot of steep or there is a big load of fresh powder on the mountain, then Kitzsteinhorn is not the place to head. Here are some pictures from the third day:
After two hot days full of fantastic snowboarding we felt like in a dream. We did not know how the snow is going to be the next day, Friday, but we didn’t care much. In the end it was still pretty nice and soft on Friday.. Here are some pictures from the 4th day:
Due to thermal activity clouds started to form on Friday and sometimes the sun did switch off for a while. Seeing a rapid growth of cumulus clouds and a fishy feeling we finished our boarding and went down to the valley. It was a crazy how quickly the weather changed as we saw a storm moving in quickly. We ran towards our car and hopped in before it started pouring buckets. Our way home was silent as we knew that up on the glacier it is raining as well. Weather does change so quickly and conditions are never going to survive more than a few days.
Saturday was our last day on the mountain. Waking up to rainy morning is not the best feeling especially when it is raining even on the mountain. We didn’t have good feelings about the conditions up there so we decided to pack our things spontaneously, move them to the car and leave the apartment. We drove to the bottom station, took the cable car.. all way long surrounded by rain. By noon the rain stopped but it was still cloudy. We had a few runs, but the snow was very sticky and wet. We arranged a small photo section, where I shot Tomas doing some stuff on a rail (photo below) by the Alpin center. As I am not into jibbing it was a straight forward affair… Afterwards we went back to the valley, had a snack and started our journey home.
All together a great trip, decent adventure and unforgettable memories…
