September Powder | Snowboarding on Kitzsteinhorn

Around seven we moved to the end station of the Kitzteinhorn resort and saw the fractus clouds flowing around the valley. This base station is located at 900m and the temperature was around 4-5°C, ideal. We knew what is up there… powder, powder and powder—but nothing to see now, snow everywhere, in your face, fog all around you.. Blindness. We bought our 5day passes and jumped on the first Gletcherjet at 8:05AM taking us to 1900m, the first station. When we got to this station we ran outside to hug the anticipated powder. After a checking the snow quality we went to the Gletcherjet2 to head towards more powder => the second station around 2500m. When we got off we stepped into 30cm fresh layer, that “happened” over night. This was sitting on another 50-70cm base! Amazing to see this all on the 11th September and only at at 2500m! The last part of the journey, the cable car to the glacier takes off at 9:00 earliest, and we were on time to catch this one to reach the top station at 3000m…The cable car was not on time as the resort was managing high avalanche danger on and off piste.

After this one hour delay we entered the last cable car for our way to the white paradise. We started snowboarding around half past ten and we tried to identify the way of the slopes and where the lift entrances were – as you could not see more than a meter-or two in front of you. Even though this was our second or third trip to this resort it felt like being there the first day. It was a really hard job but a good experience as well. During the day there were around 7 people with winter equipment in the whole resort making it really special for us to be there too, special and stupid to be honest. But the forecast said sun by noon, and that would guarantee at least 3 hours of unbeatable freeriding experience. The sun did not arrive by noon and we were dead and buried already at 2PM. Tired after this “blind” day we took the cable car down to the valley at 3PM. During our way down it happened. All of a sudden we saw the sun coming. The sunshine made the whole area look so incredible! We could not go up the glacier to try it again as the last cable car for skiers/snowboarders goes up at 2:45PM. We took our time and stayed in the Alpin Center (2450m station) for an hour and enjoyed the look of the powdery mountains. When we got down it was time for a snack and then a search for accommodation took place. All this happened quickly and a vital place to rest was found. I will never forget the moment when I was taking a twenty minute shower that day. The bed was pretty comfy and after a nice dinner a long sleep was inevitable.

The second day did have some presents for us… almost no clouds and a lot of sun!

On the first pic you can see Kitzsteinhorn, the second photo is taken in the Alpin Center (2450m) and the third photo is a slope ending by the AlpinCenter. Overall the 12th September became a fabulous day, we had sun, we had powder and hardly anyone on the mountain…what more do you need? We did a lot of riding around the Kitzsteinhorn that is surrounded with easily accessible terain. During the winter these areas do get ripped by people within one day and sometimes in February within the morning but thanks to the early-season-time (no-season-time?) there just a few people involved. We did only a few quick photo sessions during the end of this second day as we tried to enjoy the riding the most part of the day.

As a reward for joining the trip, Tomas got some cool photos.. On the first two you can see Tomas (red jacket) ripping some fresh dry white pow. Then we to change guards and you can check two photos of me that Tomas shot.
